Thinking of going electric? You may be entitled to a grant!

Thinking of going electric? You may be entitled to a grant!

If you are thinking of changing to an electric car make sure you check out if you are entitled to a grant to help toward the costs before you buy.

The grant landscape has shifted significantly. In July 2025, the UK Government launched a brand-new Electric Car Grant (ECG) scheme backed by £650 million in funding to run until 2029. Alongside it, specific infrastructure grants are available for home and workplace charging.

This blog takes you through the exact amounts available, eligibility criteria, and how the grants work right now.

1. The Grant Money Won't Last Forever

Government grants and financial incentives are designed to kickstart industries, not fund them indefinitely. The financial assistance available right now to offset the upfront cost of an EV or help install a home charging point is greater than it has ever been.

2. The New UK Electric Car Grant (Vehicle Purchase)

The current scheme has a two-tier system heavily based on the vehicle price and production sustainability standards.

Support Level

Grant Amount

Key Vehicle Requirements

Band 1 (Highest)

£3,750 off

Priced at £37,000 or below; must meet the highest government environmental and embedded carbon production standards.

Band 2 (Standard)

£1,500 off

Priced up to £42,000 or below; meets baseline technical criteria but lower lifecycle sustainability scores.

Eligibility Criteria & Rules:

  • The Price Cap Rule: The vehicle's base retail price must be £37,000 or below (before the grant is applied). However, if a model has at least one entry-level variant under £37,000, higher-spec options in that same "family" can still qualify up to a strict absolute cap of £42,000.

  • Eligible Models: Puma Gen-E and E-Tourneo Courier are eligible for £3,750, Explorer and Capri are eligible for £1,500 in selected models only. The E-Transit and E-Transit Custom are eligible up to £5,000 and the E-Transit Courier is eligible for £2,500.

  • How to Claim: Buyers do not need to fill out paperwork. The discount is automatically applied directly by the dealership at the point of order.

3. EV Charger & Infrastructure Grants

While many manufacturers including ford supply a free at home wallbox charger, if you're looking for addental wallbox chargers or a charger for a business address, other grants may be available to you.

Domestic Charge Point Funding (Scotland)

Administered by the Energy Saving Trust (EST) and funded by Transport Scotland, this is a dedicated top-up for Scottish residents.

  • The Amount: Up to £400 towards the cost of buying and installing a home chargepoint.

  • Eligibility:

  • You must live in a designated rural or remote area of Scotland (verified via the Scottish Government's postcode classification system).

  • Your annual household income must be £50,000 or less.

  • You must own or lease an eligible EV/PHEV and have primary off-street parking.

  • Note: Applications must be submitted directly by the homeowner via the GOV.UK portal before installation.

OZEV EV Chargepoint Grant (UK-Wide)

For those who don't qualify for the rural Scottish grant, the wider UK scheme provides flat-rate installation assistance.

  • The Amount: Up to 75% off the cost of a socket, capped at £350.

  • Eligibility: Restricted strictly to renters, flats/leasehold properties, landlords, or homeowners installing cross-pavement charging solutions (if they lack traditional off-street parking).

Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS)

If you operate a business, charity, or public sector hub, there are grants available to help you heavily subsidise your workplace infrastructure.

  • The Amount: Up to £500 per socket, covering up to 75% of total installation costs.

  • Eligibility: You can claim for up to a maximum of 40 sockets across all company sites. The business must have dedicated, off-street parking allocated for staff or fleet use.
